WhatsApp Business Pricing Changes From October 1, 2026: What Businesses Need to Know

Table of Content 10 sections

From October 1, 2026, replying to customers on the WhatsApp Business Application will no longer be free. Meta has announced charges per message for the free-form replies a business sends inside the 24-hour customer service window. That is the latest WhatsApp Business pricing 2026 update and the top trending news around the web.

But wait! Before you panic, there is a clarification. This does not mean WhatsApp is becoming a paid app. The change applies to the WhatsApp Business Application, the API that companies connect to a CRM, helpdesk or chatbot. If your team simply uses the free WhatsApp Business app on a phone, this update does not put a bill on your replies.

But if your sales or support team talks to hundreds of customers a day through the API, WhatsApp Business charges are about to become a real line in your monthly budget. Here is what is changing, what stays free, what it means in rupees, and how to get ready.

What Is Changing in WhatsApp Business Pricing From October 1, 2026?

Two things become billable on the WhatsApp Business Platform on 1 October 2026.

  • Service messages: These are the free-form replies your team or chatbot sends after a customer writes to you. They have been free since November 2024. From October 1, Meta charges for them per message, after a monthly free allowance of 1,000 messages per business phone number.
  • Utility templates inside the 24-hour window: Order updates, payment confirmations and similar templates sent while a customer service window is open have been free since July 2025. From October 1 they are charged at the applicable utility rate.

What does not change is the window itself. A 24-hour customer service window still opens when a customer messages you, and it resets each time they write again. You can still send free-form messages only inside that window. What Meta is changing is how those messages are priced, not the rules around when you can send them.

It is also worth knowing that these WhatsApp Business message charges apply to messages your business sends. Meta bills for business-to-customer delivery, not for what customers send you.

What Are WhatsApp Service Messages?

A service message is any non-template message you send to a customer inside an open customer service window. In plain terms, it is the normal back-and-forth of a support or sales chat: answering a product question, sharing a tracking update, walking someone through a fix, sending a document or an image, or following up on what the customer just asked.

That makes WhatsApp Business service messages different from template messages, which are pre-approved and fall into three categories:

  • Marketing: offers, launches and promotions.
  • Utility: order confirmations, delivery updates, payment alerts, appointment reminders.
  • Authentication: one-time passwords and login codes.

Templates are the only messages you can send outside the 24-hour window. Service messages are the ones you can send only inside it. If you want the full picture of WhatsApp customer service messages, that is the simplest way to remember it: the customer speaks first, you reply freely.

One small exception. Meta has said reaction messages, meaning an emoji reaction to a customer's message, will continue to be free for all businesses.

How the 1,000 Free Service Messages Work?

The WhatsApp Business 1,000 free messages allowance is easy to misread, so here are the rules as Meta describes them.

  • The allowance is per business phone number, per month, and it counts delivered service messages only.
  • Charging starts from the 1,001st delivered service message in that month.
  • Unused messages do not roll over. The counter resets at the start of each month.
  • The allowance covers service messages only. It does not cover utility templates sent inside the window, which are charged from the first message.
  • Service messages have no volume-based discount tiers, so the rate stays the same however much you send.

If your business runs several WhatsApp numbers, each number gets its own allowance. A small team on one number with light support traffic may never cross 1,000. A team handling busy lead enquiries or a large customer base can cross it within the first week of the month.

Meta has also said that eligible government and non-profit organisations will continue to get service messages free beyond the monthly allowance. That policy is set to run through December 31, 2027.

WhatsApp Business Pricing in India: What Businesses Should Expect

Meta prices service messages at the same rate it charges for utility and authentication messages in each market. For India, that rate is ₹0.115 per message on Meta's India rate card at the time of writing (30 September 2026). Meta updates rate cards only on the first day of a quarter, so it is still worth checking the official rate card before you finalise any budget.

That is a small number per message. The effect comes from volume. Here is how WhatsApp Business API pricing India look for three levels of monthly service replies on a single business number, based on the ₹0.115 rate:

Service replies per month Free allowance Billable messages Meta charge (before GST)
1,000 1,000 0 ₹0
2,500 1,000 1,500 ₹172.50
10,000 1,000 9,000 ₹1,035

Those are the Meta charges alone. Your actual bill can have three separate layers:

  • Meta's messaging fee, which is what the table above shows.
  • Your provider's fee. If you reach the WhatsApp API charges through a Business Solution Provider or a platform, that subscription or platform fee is separate from Meta's per-message charge.
  • Taxes. GST is charged on top, so factor it in when you budget.

So when you compare WhatsApp Business API pricing in India across providers, look at what each one charges on top of Meta's rate, and whether they pass Meta's charges through at cost. Meta WhatsApp pricing is the same wherever you buy access. The difference is in what sits around it.

What Messages Are Still Free?

Not everything gets a price tag on October 1. These stay free:

  • Messages from customers to you. Meta does not charge for inbound messages.
  • The first 1,000 delivered service messages per business phone number each month.
  • Messages inside a free entry point window. If a customer reaches you through a Click to WhatsApp ad or a Facebook Page call-to-action button, and you reply within 24 hours, Meta opens a 72-hour window in which any message type is free.
  • Reaction messages, as noted above.

Every free-or-paid detail should still be checked against Meta's documentation before you build a budget on it. Meta has changed these rules several times in the past two years, and it may do so again.

WhatsApp Business App vs WhatsApp Business Platform: What Is the Difference?

WhatsApp Business app is the free app many small shops, clinics, freelancers and local services use on a phone. You install it, set up a business profile and chat with customers by hand. There is no per-message fee for replies you send from the app, and this update does not change that.

The WhatsApp Business Platform, often called the API, is built for companies that need scale. It connects WhatsApp to software: a CRM, a shared team inbox, a chatbot, automated notifications. Multiple agents can work on one number, and messages can be triggered by systems. This is the product that has always had per-message pricing for templates, and it is the only one where the October change applies.

So a corner store answering customers from a phone is not about to receive a Meta bill. A business running support and sales through the API needs to plan for one.

How This Change Could Affect Sales and Customer Support Teams

No need for alarm, but the shift is real. Until now, a long conversation cost a business nothing in Meta fees. From October 1, every reply past the free allowance counts. A support chat where an agent sends six replies to sort out one delivery issue now adds up to six billable messages, not one conversation.

A few things are worth watching:

  • Message volume per number: Know how many service messages each number sends in a normal month, and how close you sit to 1,000.
  • Automated replies: Chatbot and auto-responder messages sent inside the window are service messages too. A flow that sends five short messages where one clear message would do is now a small recurring cost.
  • Repeat and filler messages: "Got it," "One moment," and "Any other questions?" are all billable once you pass the allowance.
  • In-window utility templates: Order and payment updates sent while a chat is open are charged from the first message.

How CRMFORALL Can Help Businesses Manage WhatsApp-Based Sales Workflows

CRMFORALL (also written CRM FOR ALL) is an AI-powered CRM for sales teams that brings leads, calls, email and WhatsApp into one workspace. Its product site is at crmforall.ai.

Meta sets the price of WhatsApp messages, and no CRM changes that. What a good WhatsApp CRM does is give your team structure and visibility, which is exactly what helps when messages start costing money. With CRMFORALL, a CRM with WhatsApp integration, teams can:

  • See WhatsApp and email conversations on the same timeline as the lead, so nobody has to ask a customer the same thing twice.
  • Track every lead through a pipeline with source, stage and history in one screen, so managers can see which conversations are stuck.
  • Use round-robin assignment so new enquiries reach the next available rep quickly.
  • Set up Aanya.ai AutoPilot for WhatsApp, which replies using live CRM data based on workflow rules you define, with a per-lead pause so a human can take over any conversation.
  • Keep working from the Android and iOS apps, with the same conversations and permissions as on the web.

What Businesses Should Do Before October 1, 2026

The date is here, so treat this as a short checklist for the next few days.

  • List your WhatsApp Business Platform numbers: Each one has its own free allowance.
  • Estimate service-message volume per number: Use last month's delivered messages as a starting point.
  • Audit your automation: Look for chatbot flows that split one answer into many messages.
  • Review in-window utility templates: Work out how many order or payment updates you send while chats are open.
  • Ask your provider what they charge on top of Meta: Get platform fees and pass-through terms in writing.
  • Confirm billing is set up: Make sure a valid payment method is attached to your WhatsApp Business Account. Some providers have warned that service messages may not be delivered without one, so check with yours today.
  • Monitor usage weekly for the first month: Meta's analytics show per-message pricing data, and your provider or CRM may show it too.

FAQs

1. Is WhatsApp Business becoming paid?

No. The free WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business apps are not affected. The change applies to the WhatsApp Business Platform (API), where service messages become chargeable per message from October 1, 2026.

2. What are WhatsApp service messages?

They are the free-form, non-template replies a business sends to a customer inside an open 24-hour customer service window, such as support answers, questions and follow-ups.

3. How many free service messages do I get?

Each business phone number gets 1,000 delivered service messages free every month. Charges begin from the 1,001st message, and unused messages do not carry over.

4. Is the 24-hour window ending?

No. The window stays as it is. It opens when a customer messages you and resets with each new customer message. Only the pricing of messages sent inside it changes.

5. Are customer messages charged?

No. Messages sent by customers to your business are free. Meta bills for business-to-customer message delivery.

6. Does the free WhatsApp Business app fall under this change?

No. Replies you send manually from the free WhatsApp Business app are not billed under the API per-message model.

7. Which messages stay free after the WhatsApp Business October 2026 update?

Messages sent by customers to your business are free, since Meta bills only for messages from businesses to users. Messages inside the 72-hour free entry point window, which opens when a customer comes from a Click to WhatsApp ad or a Facebook call-to-action button, also stay free for delivery.

8. How are WhatsApp API charges for service messages calculated?

Meta charges per delivered message, not per conversation. The rate depends on the market and is the same as the utility and authentication rate for that country. Meta does not offer volume discounts on service messages, so the rate stays the same however many you send. Meta may update rates up to quarterly, so check the current rate card before budgeting.
